Clearing Negative Energy

One of the most popular questions I get asked is regarding how to clear negative energy in our homes and around us. Entering a space can make you feel light and uplifted, or leave you feeling depleted and drained. Either way, you are responding to the energy of that environment. This is one of my favorite topics because clearing my personal space is something I do consciously and on a daily basis. I do it in several different ways, depending on the need and my mood. Here are the how’s and the why’s.

Before clearing the energy of anything else, you should always start with yourself.

SPRITZING is a quick and easy way to clear the energy around you and your space. I put about 10 drops of essential oil in a 2 oz size spritzer bottle (preferably glass rather than plastic) and then fill the rest of the bottle with water. The higher quality the water, the better.

I use this on myself and in my bedroom. It’s especially helpful to spritz my bed and pillows before bed to welcome in a good nights’ sleep. My favorite scent is Lemon Essential Oil for its refreshing scent and cleansing properties. I buy the NOW brand at my local health food store and it costs about $5 per bottle. Other great choices are rosemary, grapefruit, tea tree, eucalyptus and cinnamon.

SMUDGING is the burning of certain herbs to create a cleansing smoke bath, which is used to purify and protect people, space and things. The effect of the smoke is said to banish negative energies.

A smudge stick contains one or more herbs (sage, sweet grass, lavender, cedar) bound together and can be purchased at your local health food, metaphysical, Native American shop or online. Light the end of the stick, blow out the flame and allow it to smolder. It is the smoke that does the trick. I recommend holding something under it, like a shell or bowl. Trust me on this one. I have lit more than one pare of pants on fire from a falling spark!

You can also purchase the herbs alone and combine them in the shell.  They don’t have to be bound. Use your own intuition on what works best for you.

If you are going to smudge your entire home, start at the front door and work clockwise through your home. Go around, inside and under everything. Open your cupboards, your toilet seat, your closet. End back at the front door, with the intention of clearing the space there so that any potential negativity is left outside.

There is also a smokeless sage product I’ve used in areas where burning is not allowed. It smells fantastic.

NAURAL SEA SALTS. Dead Sea Salts have been used for ages to heal the mind body and spirit. They contain minerals that naturally occur in our bodies but are lost throughout the day and must be replenished. When absorbed, these minerals treat, detoxify and cleanse our bodies.

Sea salts can be used for bathing in, scrubbing down, using as a compress, spritzing over self and sleeping area, or consumed in small amounts. As a scrub, I suggest using in the shower rather than the bath so that you can literally wash off the negative energy and watch it go down the drain. Visuals are splendid!

Spritzing salt water over the front door serves the same purpose as smudging it. You can even mop your floors with salt water to really amp it up. Add 5 spoons of unrefined sea salt to your bucket of water and mop away.

Finally, the most basic things you can do to clear the energy of your home are sweeping, dusting, lighting candles, playing uplifting music, inviting in positive energy and as always, thinking good thoughts.
